WHEREAS, the Republic of Turkey was founded on October 29, 1923, by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk who created today's modern Turkey on the ruins of the Ottoman Empire and was the architect of
this democratic and secular state; and
WHEREAS, in a country ruled by the Ottoman Sultans since 1299, Ataturk had the courage and vision to do away with the traditional system. In a divided and occupied country, with little
hope for success, he began the Turkish War of Independence resulting in total victory for, and the creation of, the Republic of Turkey; and
WHEREAS, in pursuit of Ataturk’s principle of, "Peace at home, peace in the world," Turkey has been an active partner in international organizations and alliances, to defend common democratic
values, and to contribute to the maintenance of peace and freedom in the Turkish region and to the whole world; and
WHEREAS, Americans of Turkish descent in Cupertino have played a significant role in the educational, cultural, economic and civic development of our community through sharing their
rich cultural heritage and through their dedication to the responsibilities of good citizenship; and
WHEREAS, all Turks and Turkish Americans and the Friends of Turkey will be commemorating Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, on November 21.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Mayor Michael Chang, and the Cupertino City Council, do hereby proclaim November 10 as
Turkish-American Friendship Day and
Ataturk Remembrance Day
in recognition of this significant day in history and in appreciation of the history of the Republic of Turkey, its people, and for the cultural wealth that has been shared with the
people and City of Cupertino.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Monday, November 21, Two Thousand and Two.
