HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 Knapen Proclamation - Word - 04.06.2005PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the city of Cupertino wishes to recognize the remarkable accomplishments and leadership of Jan-Willem Knapen, who, at the age of 14 was diagnosed with three different brain
tumors; and,
WHEREAS, over the last two years, 16-year-old JW Knapen has shown courage and grace in his grueling fight against brain cancer, enduring surgery, radiation and chemotherapy treatments;
and,
WHEREAS, in April 2004, when a virulent, inoperable new brain tumor was discovered, JW decided to focus on how he might help others with medical struggles of their own, when he envisioned
building a house near Kaiser Hospital, in Santa Clara, California where families can stay with their loved ones during long hospitalizations; and,
WHEREAS, JW wanted this house to be a place for brothers and sisters to talk quietly; a place for moms and dads and grandparents to be able to eat together; a place to talk with other
families who are facing similar challenges – a place that feels like a “home away from home”; and,
WHEREAS, JW started raising money to build this house. He and his family are tireless in their efforts to bring his dream to reality. To date they have raised over $400,000.
NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Mayor Patrick Kwok, and the City Council of Cupertino, do hereby recognize
Jan-Willem Knapen
in recognition of his thoughtfulness, leadership and profound lesson he has taught to the people, families and community of Cupertino, “never give up.”
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Tuesday, April 5, Two Thousand and Five.
