HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 Colorectal Cancer Proclamation - Word - 02.08.2005PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on Tuesday, March 1, Two-Thousand and Five, the city of Cupertino wishes to recognize that colorectal cancers are the third most common site of new cancers and deaths in the United States in men and women over the age of 50; and, WHEREAS, In Santa Clara County, 635 new cases will be diagnosed and almost 195 will die of this preventable cancer; and WHEREAS, Screening can prevent the occurrence of colorectal cancer by detecting and removing pre-cancerous polyps and can diagnose an early stage of the disease when it can be effectively cured; and WHEREAS, research suggests that increased awareness and use of early detection practices such as following the American Cancer Society’s recommended screening guidelines, including examination by a health care provider, can reduce cancer risk; and, WHEREAS, the city of Cupertino is committed to informing employees and residents about the risk factors and available precautions that can be taken to fight this disease. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that I, Mayor Patrick Kwok, and the Cupertino City Council, do hereby declare the month of March, 2005 as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in the city of Cupertino and urge all employees and residents to become aware of their risks for colorectal cancer, and to talk to their health care providers and, when necessary, take the necessary screening tests.
