WHEREAS, colorectal (combined colon and rectum) cancers are the third most common site of new cancers and deaths in the United States in both men and women over the age of 50; and
WHEREAS, approximately 147,500 new cases and 57,100 deaths will occur from the disease in the United States in 2005; and
WHEREAS, research suggests that the risk of colorectal cancer can be reduced by increased awareness and use of early detection practices, and following the American Cancer Society's
recommended screening guidelines, including examination by health care provider; and
WHEREAS, screening can prevent the occurrence of colorectal cancer by detecting and removing pre-cancerous polyps or can diagnose an early stage of the disease when it can be effectively
cured; and
WHEREAS, in Santa Clara County, 635 new cases will be diagnosed and almost 195 will die of this preventable cancer; and
WHEREAS, sister cities in Santa Clara County have declared themselves “a colon cancer free zone” by implementing an awareness program to help eliminate colon cancer in their community;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Cupertino is committed to informing employees and residents about the risk factors and available precautions that can be taken to fight the disease and is encouraging
other cities to do the same.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Patrick Kwok, Mayor of the City of Cupertino, along with my colleagues on the City Council, hereby proclaim the City of Cupertino a
Colon Cancer Free Zone
and urge all employees and residents to become aware of their risks for colorectal cancer, talk to their health care providers and, when appropriate, take the necessary screening tests
for the disease.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this First day of March, Two-thousand and Five.
