WHEREAS, for more than two centuries, Americans have been called to defend the founding ideals of our democracy. On Memorial Day, a grateful Nation remembers the proud patriots who made
the ultimate sacrifice in defense of liberty's blessings; and,
WHEREAS, this year we honor many heroes by observing the 60th anniversary of D-Day on the beaches of Normandy, and acknowledge the contributions of veterans and the city of Cupertino
to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and,
WHEREAS, Nearly 59 years after the end of World War II, the National World War II Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, May 29, 2004. The celebration culminated an
11-year effort to honor America’s World War II generation; and,
WHEREAS, in January, 2001, at the request of local veterans, the city of Cupertino contributed $5,000 toward the completion of this national World War II Memorial, in recognition of
the many Cupertino residents, past and present who risked and gave their lives for our way of life.
NOW, therefore, I, Mayor Sandra James, and the Cupertino City Council, do hereby acknowledge and recognize and honor the
Veterans of World War II
who took up the struggle during the second world war and made the sacrifices to perpetuate the gift our forbearers entrusted to us: a nation conceived in liberty and justice.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the city of Cupertino to be affixed on the Seventh day of June, Two-Thousand and Four.
