WHEREAS, the mission of Silicon Valley Reads is to promote reading and literacy and an appreciation for good literature while building community; and
WHEREAS, Silicon Valley is known worldwide for its achievements in innovative thinking and the exploration of ideas; and
WHEREAS, great books spark provocative discussions that can lead to a valuable exchange of perspectives, life experiences and understanding among widely-diverse readers; and
WHEREAS, the City of Cupertino is committed to education, challenging thought, open dialogue and community-building activities.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the mayor and city council of the city of Cupertino do hereby proclaim February 2006 as
Silicon Valley Reads Month
In Cupertino and calls upon the residents of Cupertino to read the 2006 Silicon Valley Reads books, “When The Emperor Was Divine” by Julie Otsuka and “The Souvenir: A Daughter Discovers
Her Father’s War” by Louise Steinman, and to discuss the relevant themes of these books with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors and others in the Silicon Valley community.
Jerra has been a teacher, coach and athletic director at Lynbrook and Monta Vista high schools; and
WHEREAS, Jerra had an enormously positive and far reaching influence on thousands of young people as they progressed through both her classroom and athletic programs; and
WHEREAS, Jerra’s field hockey teams have been renown for their competitiveness and championships while at the same time building strong team bonds and lasting friendships; and
WHEREAS, Jerra has developed a great relationship with many of the families of current and former players who still meet with her for dinner and on holidays and many former students
and players often come back to reminisce, seek advice, and just to visit with her.
the Mayor and City Council of the city of Cupertino do hereby honor and recognize
Jerra Rowland
on her retirement and thank her for the leadership and commitment she has demonstrated in the field of education, wishing her continued success in all future endeavors.
