WHEREAS, Whereas, between 350 and 400 million people, globally, are infected with the hepatitis B virus (HBV), which causes 80% of liver cancer; and
WHEREAS, people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent are most at risk, one in ten Asian-Americans being a chronic carrier of the disease; and
WHEREAS, HBV being the greatest health disparity among Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the population of the City of Cupertino being predominantly Asian-American; and
WHEREAS, increasing awareness of HBV is critical in our communities, and the Asian Health Awareness Club of Monta Vista High School seeks to mobilize and educate API youth to become
active leaders in the prevention and eradication of Hepatitis B;
NOW, therefore, the Mayor and City Council of the city of Cupertino do hereby declare the week of March 19 through 23, in Cupertino to be
HBV Week
and encourage residents to support programs to promote awareness and treatment of this disease in Cupertino and throughout Northern California.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the city of Cupertino to be affixed on the Twentieth day of February, Two-Thousand and Seven.
