HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 Fair Housing Month Proclamation - Word - 04.23.2008PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on Tuesday, May Sixth, Two Thousand and Eight, the City of Cupertino wishes to recognize Fair Housing Month; and WHEREAS, Housing is a basic need and right of all people; and WHEREAS, April 2008, marks the 40th anniversary of the enactment of the Federal Fair Housing Act of 1968 (Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act), which states that discrimination in the sale and rental of housing is illegal when based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or familial status; and WHEREAS, California law protects against the aforementioned categories of discrimination as well as discrimination based upon age, marital status or any other arbitrary factor; and WHEREAS, the Eden Council for Hope and Opportunity (ECHO) continues to support equal opportunities in housing, and works with local governments to affirmatively further fair housing and provide a positive fair housing climate; and WHEREAS, in order to heighten public awareness of fair housing, the City of Cupertino wishes to focus public attention on National Fair Housing Month. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby declare the month of April as Fair Housing Month and encourage all citizens and community organizations to celebrate the value of harmonious and diverse communities and to support the goal of equal housing opportunity for all people. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Tuesday, May Sixth, Two Thousand and Eight. ________________________ Dolly Sandoval, Mayor
