WHEREAS, on Saturday, April Twenty-Fifth, Two Thousand and Nine, the City of Cupertino wishes to recognize Pandit Habib Khan; and
WHEREAS, Pandit has emerged among his peers as one of the most influential musicians and an ambassador of Indian classical music; and
WHEREAS, he creates music which spans many genres and has become an important contributor to the Indo American Classical music world as well as the Jazz scene and the fusion movement
in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Pandit frequently uses Western guitar, drums, violin & Japanese Taiko drums in his orchestral compositions; and
WHEREAS, he lives and teaches in the San Francisco Bay Area and is the founder and artistic director of the Habib Khan Saraswati Temple and Gurukul, a non-profit organization dedicated
to promoting the classical music of North India; and
WHEREAS, on October Eleven, the Rotary Club of Cupertino and the Habib Khan Saraswati Temple and Gurukul hosted a mesmerizing musical evening aptly titled “Ehsaas Hai?” (Do You Feel?),
at the Flint Center to raise funds for the Polio Plus Fund of the Rotary Foundation, which works towards polio eradication in India; and
WHEREAS, Rotary International has been involved in various initiatives towards eradicating polio from the world since Nineteen Eighty-Five, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
has given Rotary a matching donation of two hundred and sixty-five million dollars towards its initiatives; and
WHEREAS, the concert raised over twenty-three thousand dollars for the Rotary Polio Plus Campaign to go toward meeting the Gates Foundation challenge.
NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby recognize
Pandit Habib Khan
and the Habib Khan Saraswati Temple and Gurukul for their outstanding work in helping to eliminate polio from the world.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Saturday, April Twenty-Fifth, Two Thousand and Nine.
