WHEREAS, on Wednesday, November Eighteenth, Two Thousand and Nine the City of Cupertino wishes to recognize End Polio Now Day in Cupertino; and
WHEREAS, Cupertino Rotary Club End Polio Now Day is a positive initiative to create awareness and educate the citizens of Cupertino about the vital importance to eradicate polio worldwide;
and
WHEREAS, Cupertino Rotary is one of 32,000 Rotary clubs located in more than 200 countries and geographical areas that initiate service projects to address today’s challenges, including
illiteracy, disease, hunger, poverty, lack of clean water, and environmental concerns; and
WHEREAS, in 1985, Rotary launched PolioPlus, an ambitious program to immunize the world’s children against polio; and
WHEREAS, Rotary’s grassroots leadership volunteer support and initial funding for vaccine, provided the catalyst for the World Health Assembly’s resolution in 1988 to eradicate polio
worldwide; and
WHEREAS, spearheading partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative are the World Health Organization, Rotary International, U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention and
UNICEF; and
WHEREAS, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded US$355 million to Rotary International in the global effort to eradicate polio, $200 million being a challenge grant to Rotary;
and
WHEREAS, polio eradication has been Rotary’s top priority since 1985, with more than $1.2 billion contributed to the effort.
NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby proclaim October Twenty-Fourth, Two Thousand and Nine as
End Polio Now Day
in Cupertino and encourage citizens to support Cupertino Rotary’s goal of creating a polio-free world .
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Wednesday, November Eighteenth, Two Thousand and Nine.
