WHEREAS, on Saturday, January Seventeenth, Two Thousand and Nine, the City of Cupertino wishes to recognize Eleanor J. Watanabe; and
WHEREAS, Eleanor J. Watanabe is the executive director and past president of the Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation (CEEF), a non-profit corporation that provides funds and encourages
community support for educational programs in the Cupertino Union School District; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Watanabe has played an active leadership role over the past two decades in support of educational programs in our community, serving as president of the De Anza College
Commission, member of the executive committees of the Foothill-DeAnza Community Colleges Foundation and Junior League of Palo Alto, board member of Euphrat Museum of Art, and Advisory
Board member of the Museum of American Heritage; and
WHEREAS, early childhood preventive health care and education is an area of primary concern for Mrs. Watanabe. During her two terms as a member of the Camino Healthcare Foundation Board
of Trustees, she led community outreach efforts to achieve a better understanding of community health care needs. She chaired the foundation’s Corporate/Community Leadership Breakfast,
Community Health Care Needs Assessment, Health Care Task Force, and annual benefit that netted over $112,000 for community health care education programs and services.
WHEREAS, environmental education and social justice issues are also important to Mrs. Watanabe. As a two- term member of the Hidden Villa Board of Trustees, she served on the Executive
Committee, Strategic Planning Steering Committee, and chaired the Frank and Josephine Duveneck Humanitarian Awards Dinner benefit for two years; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Watanabe served as president of Cupertino Rotary during the 2002-2003 year. One of the highlights of her year included leading a delegation of 25 Rotarians on a humanitarian
project to Santiago, Chile to deliver wheelchairs to disabled children and attend the opening of a children’s hospital for which the club had helped to provide critically needed medical
equipment. Prior to her year as president of the Rotary Club of Cupertino, she served as director of Club and Community Services, secretary, and member of the New Models Task Force.
She currently serves on the club endowment board.
NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby commend and recognize
Eleanor J. Watanabe
for her dedication, outstanding work, and creating a better community for Cupertino.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Saturday, January Seventeenth, Two Thousand and Nine.
