WHEREAS, on Tuesday, March Seventeenth, Two Thousand and Nine, the City of Cupertino wishes to recognize Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, colorectal (combined colon and rectum) cancers are the third most common site of new cancers and deaths in the United States in both men and women over the age of fifty; and
WHEREAS, approximately fourteen thousand two hundred and fifty new cases and five thousand one hundred and forty deaths will occur from the disease in California in Two Thousand and
Nine; and
WHEREAS, research suggests that the risk of colorectal cancer can be reduced by increased awareness, use of early detection practices, and following the American Cancer Society’s recommended
screening guidelines, including examination by a health care provider; and
WHEREAS, screening can prevent the occurrence of colorectal cancer by detecting and removing precancerous polyps or diagnosing an early stage of the disease when it can be effectively
cured; and
WHEREAS, in Santa Clara County, six hundred and sixty five new cases will be diagnosed and almost two hundred and five will die of this preventable cancer; and
WHEREAS, sister cities in Santa Clara County have declared themselves “a colon cancer free zone” by implementing an awareness program to help eliminate colon cancer in their community;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Cupertino is committed to informing employees and residents about the risk factors and available precautions that can be taken to fight the disease and encouraging
other cities to do the same.
NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby proclaim the month of March Two Thousand and Nine as
Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
in Cupertino and urge all employees and residents to become aware of their risks for colorectal cancer, talk to their health care providers and, when appropriate, take the necessary
screening tests for the disease.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Tuesday, March Seventeenth, Two Thousand and Nine.
