WHEREAS, on Wednesday, May Twenty-Seventh, Two Thousand and Nine, the City of Cupertino wishes to recognize Better Hearing and Speech Month; and
WHEREAS, hearing loss is the most common birth defect in the U.S. with one out of every three hundred newborns annually affected by hearing loss; and
WHEREAS, congenital hearing loss can result in pervasive, severe, lifelong limitations in speech and language that affect the individual and their families along with posing a large
financial impact to society; and
WHEREAS, children with hearing loss who do not receive appropriate early intervention services will result in special education’s costs averaging four hundred and twenty thousand dollars
per child, and the lifetime cost to society topping one million dollars per individual; and
WHEREAS, only twenty percent of infants with hearing loss born in the U.S. are being properly assessed; and
WHEREAS, in response to this critical need, Let Them Hear Foundation (LTHF) was formed as a 501(c)(3) organization in Two Thousand and Two to bring the miracle of hearing to those who
choose not to live in silence, and as a core component of the agency’s mission, LTHF provides access to medical care for all, regardless of income, insurance provider, or country of
residence; and
WHEREAS, on both a national and international level, LTHF is dedicated to expanding access to educational support, medical services and equipment related to hearing loss.
NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby proclaim the month of May, Two Thousand and Nine, as
Better Hearing and Speech Month
in Cupertino and support LTHF’s work with helping children affected by hearing loss and commend them for their exceptional work in the treatment and care of children with hearing loss.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Wednesday, May Twenty-Seventh, Two Thousand and Nine.
