HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 World Polio Day Proclamation - Word - 10.20.2010PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on Sunday, October Twenty-Fourth, Two Thousand and Ten, the City of Cupertino wishes to recognize World Polio Day in Cupertino; and WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Cupertino World Polio Day is a positive initiative to create awareness and educate the citizens of Cupertino about the vital importance to eradicate Polio worldwide; and WHEREAS, Rotary brings one hundred and five years of history to this initiative; and WHEREAS, its members are business, professional and community leaders who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards, and help build goodwill and peace in the world; and WHEREAS, when Rotary began its mission to eradicate polio more than three hundred fifty thousand children were stricken with polio every year, and nearly one thousand people were affected by the crippling disease every day; and WHEREAS, since then, polio cases have been reduced by ninety-nine percent to fewer than one thousand seven hundred cases in Two Thousand and Nine; and WHEREAS, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has awarded three hundred and fifty-five million dollars to Rotary International in the global effort to eradicate polio; and WHEREAS, Polio eradication has been Rotary’s top priority since Nineteen Eighty-Five, with more than one point two billion dollars contributed to the effort. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby proclaim October Twenty-Fourth, Two Thousand and Ten as World Polio Day in Cupertino and thank the Rotary Club of Cupertino for their outstanding work in helping to decline the number of polio cases around the world. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Sunday, October Twenty-Fourth, Two Thousand and Ten. ________________________ Kris Wang, Mayor
