HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 Tartan Day Proclamation - Word - 04.05.2010PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on Tuesday, April Sixth, Two Thousand and Ten, the City of Cupertino wishes to recognize Tartan Day in Cupertino; and WHEREAS, Tartan Day is celebrated on April Sixth each year, since that was the date of the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in Thirteen Twenty, which asserted Scotland’s sovereignty over English territorial claims and had an influence on the American Declaration of Independence; and WHEREAS, Tartan Day honors the over eleven million Scottish-Americans in the United States, making them the eighth largest ethnic group in the country, with over two hundred organizations of Scottish heritage, tradition and culture; and WHEREAS, Tartan Day recognizes the monumental achievements and valuable contributions made by the Scottish-Americans that have led to America’s preeminence in the fields of architecture, economics, government, literature, media, medicine, politics, religion, science, technology and the visual and performing arts; and WHEREAS, Tartan Day was first observed nationwide in the United States on April Sixth, Nineteen Ninety-Seven, and April Six was officially recognized as Tartan Day on a permanent basis when the U.S. Senate passed Resolution 155. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby declare April Six, Two Thousand and Ten, as Tartan Day in Cupertino and urge all citizens to celebrate the cultural diversity that enriches our entire community. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Tuesday, April Sixth, Two Thousand and Ten. ________________________ Kris Wang, Mayor
