WHEREAS, on Tuesday, May Eighteenth, Two Thousand and Ten, the City of Cupertino wishes to recognize Hepatitis B Awareness Week in Cupertino; and
WHEREAS, the hepatitis B virus (HBV) attacks the liver and can cause one in four people to die of liver cancer if not properly monitored and treated; and
WHEREAS, hepatitis B is a worldwide epidemic that is killing one million people every year; and
WHEREAS, liver cancer is the single greatest health disparity between Asian Americans and Caucasians; and
WHEREAS, the Jade Ribbon Youth Council of the Asian Liver Center at Stanford University will unite with other high schools, businesses, and community organizations in the Bay Area to
help fight hepatitis B and liver cancer worldwide.
NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby declare the week of May Sixteenth through Twenty-Second, Two Thousand and Ten as
Hepatitis B Awareness Week
in Cupertino and encourage residents to support programs to promote awareness and treatment of the disease in Cupertino and throughout Northern California.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Tuesday, May Eighteenth, Two Thousand and Ten.
