WHEREAS, on Friday, May Fourteenth, Two Thousand and Ten, the City of Cupertino wishes to recognize the 9th Annual Palestinian Cultural Day; and
WHEREAS, Palestinians trace their roots back to the Canaanites, who inhabited the land west of the Jordan River and the Dead Sea; and
WHEREAS, Palestinians primarily speak Arabic and profess either a Christian or Muslim faith; and
WHEREAS, Palestinian culture is presented through books, poetry, music, proverbs, and handicrafts made with cross-stitch embroidery patterns that often display ethnic
or regional identity and honor a rich cultural legacy from centuries past that are important symbols of Palestinian culture; and
WHEREAS, Palestinians have embraced, for over two thousand years, core values such as love of family, commitment to education, hospitality, and reverence for land, and they now share
these values with the residents of Santa Clara County; and
WHEREAS, Palestinian residents of Santa Clara County now number approximately thirty thousand and have made major contributions to the County in the fields of business engineering, law
and medicine, as well as through their cultural talents in the areas of poetry, literature, dance and music; and
WHEREAS, Palestinians living in Santa Clara County will hold the 9th Annual Palestinian Cultural Day that honors the local Palestinian community and its contributions to the County’s
civic life as well as the historical and cultural contributions of Palestinians throughout the world.
NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby recognize the celebration of the
9th Annual Palestinian Cultural Day
and urge all citizens to celebrate the cultural diversity that enriches our entire community.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Friday, May Fourteenth, Two Thousand and Ten.
