WHEREAS, on Sunday, January Sixteenth, Two Thousand and Eleven, the City of
Cupertino wishes to recognize the Chinese American Abacus Association (CAAA); and
WHEREAS, since abacus and mental arithmetic education began in Northern
California's Silicon Valley a decade ago, the excellent achievements in math by students
of mental arithmetic have aroused attention and interest from public schools; and
WHEREAS, many Chinese schools in California have added mental arithmetic to their
Culture Class curriculum, contributing to the spread of the unique Chinese culture into
American society; and
WHEREAS, this association is a non-profit organization with members mainly consisting
of abacus and mental arithmetic teachers from various Chinese schools and people alike
who have the same kind of experience and enthusiasm; and
WHEREAS, they are involved in a variety of Chinese school and other cultural activities
to educate people and to demonstrate the beauty of Chinese culture; and
WHEREAS, their objectives are to promote and popularize abacus and mental
arithmetic, conduct abacus and mental arithmetic assessment tests and award certificates
thereof, participate in local community culture activities to demonstrate the uses of
abacus and mental arithmetic, and to link with and create ties with overseas abacus and
mental arithmetic groups, and to exchange experience and knowledge.
NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby
commend and recognize the
Chinese American Abacus
Association
for their hard work and commitment in encouraging the education of abacus and mental
arithmetic techniques in our community.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of
Cupertino to be affixed this Sunday, January Sixteenth, Two Thousand and Eleven.
