HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 West Valley Muslim Association Ramadan Iftar Proclamation - Word - 08.22.2011PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on Saturday, August Twenty-Seventh, Two Thousand and Eleven, the City of Cupertino wishes to recognize the West Valley Muslim Association (WVMA) Ramadan Iftar and Open House; and WHEREAS, Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a special time for Muslims during which they abstain from food, drink, and other worldly pleasures from dawn until sunset; and WHEREAS, fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, which serves as a spiritual and physical cleansing of both the mind and body respectively; and WHEREAS, the WVMA Open House outreach effort is designed to enhance understanding of Islam and to help Americans of all faiths meet their Muslim neighbors by taking part in a complimentary Ramadan “iftar” or fast-breaking meal; and WHEREAS, more than one thousand guests from all over the Bay Area have been invited, including local and state political representatives, interfaith leaders, professors, activists and law enforcement officials. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby recognize the WVMA Ramadan Iftar & Open House and thank everyone for their participation in this wonderful event and for creating a stronger and better community for the City of Cupertino. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Saturday, August Twenty-Seventh, Two Thousand and Eleven. ________________________ Gilbert Wong, Mayor
