HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 Santa Clara County Library- Proclamation - Word - 02.01.2011PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on Tuesday, February First, Two Thousand and Eleven, the City of Cupertino wishes to recognize the Santa Clara County Library for their support of the 9th Annual Silicon Valley Reads; and WHEREAS, the 9th Annual Silicon Valley Reads program’s mission is to promote reading and literacy, broaden the exposure to and appreciation of good literature, and build community; and WHEREAS, this year’s Silicon Valley Reads featured selection is The Year of Fog, written by award-winning author, Michelle Richmond; and WHEREAS, three children's books were selected as companions for The Year of Fog, which are Pouch! by David Ezra Stein, One by Kathryn Otoshi, and Alabama Moon by Watt Key; all offer themes of perseverance, self sufficiency and hope; and WHEREAS, there will be opportunities for Cupertino residents to read and discuss the Silicon Valley Reads books at Library events in January, February and March Two Thousand and Eleven; and WHEREAS, the Cupertino Library Foundation is sponsoring an essay contest and a photo contest for adults and teens, both of which are inspired by the themes of The Year of Fog; and WHEREAS, the Cupertino Library Foundation provided a generous donation of $10,000.00 to support Silicon Valley Reads; and WHEREAS, the Friends of the Cupertino Library provided a generous donation of $3,000.00 to support Silicon Valley Reads. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby commend and recognize the Santa Clara County Library for their hard work, dedication, and their support of the Silicon Valley Reads program.
