HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 Mahatma Gandhi Day 2011 Proclamation - Word - 08.31.2011PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on Sunday, October Second, Two Thousand and Eleven, the City of Cupertino wishes to recognize Mahatma Gandhi Day in Cupertino; and WHEREAS, he was the pre-eminent political and spiritual leader of India during the Indian independence movement; and WHEREAS, the United Nations and the world observes Mahatma Gandhi's birthday, October Second, as The International Day of Non-Violence; and WHEREAS, Mahatma Gandhi's novel mode of mass mobilization and non-violent action strengthened the roots of popular sovereignty, of civil, political and economic rights, and greatly influenced and inspired leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr., Caesar Chavez, and many others. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby declare October Second, Two Thousand and Eleven as Mahatma Gandhi Day in Cupertino and call upon our citizens to celebrate and help promote a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding and non-violence through education and public awareness. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Sunday, October Second, Two Thousand and Eleven. ________________________ Gilbert Wong, Mayor
