WHEREAS, during the month of May, Santa Clara County will observe the Hep B Free Campaign in a county-wide effort to educate, screen, and test for hepatitis B; and
WHEREAS, hepatitis B is a disease caused by infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV), with 1 in 10 Asian and Pacific Islanders chronically infected in the U.S.; and
WHEREAS, this campaign is a movement made up of a coalition of health care providers, community organizations, elected officials, local government, students and concerned citizens; and
WHEREAS, hepatitis B is the world's most common serious viral infection of the liver and can cause premature death from liver disease or liver cancer; and
WHEREAS, hepatitis B health goals can be accomplished by building public and healthcare provider awareness about the importance of testing and vaccinating Asians and Pacific Islanders
for hepatitis B and providing access to medical management for chronically infected individuals; and
WHEREAS, activities during this campaign will include World Multi-Cultural Day, increasing Hepatitis B testing and vaccination rates among Asian and Pacific Islander residents of Santa
Clara County, promoting routine Hepatitis B testing and vaccination within the primary care setting and numerous other community activities.
NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby proclaim May as
Hepatitis B Awareness Month
in Cupertino, and encourage our residents to support the Hep B Free Santa Clara County Campaign in its fight to raise awareness of this serious disease in our community.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Tuesday, May Seventh, Two Thousand and Thirteen.
