HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 Golden Generation Cycling Team Proclamation - Word - 04.15.2014PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the Care and Concern Society of Taiwan, an international non-profit organization that helps seniors lead enriching lives, launched the Grand Riders Cycling program in 2007 where so far cyclists have ridden 5,000 miles in cycling trips around Taiwan, mainland China, Malaysia and Singapore; and WHEREAS, the Golden Generation Cycling Team, consisting of 40 senior riders with an average age of 70, who began cycling down the Pacific Coast from Vancouver, British Columbia on Tuesday, April First, Two Thousand and Fourteen and will conclude their 2,000 km (1,243 mile) journey to San Francisco, California on Saturday, April Nineteenth, Two Thousand and Fourteen; and WHEREAS, the oldest rider on the tour is 93-year-old Lien Chiang, who despite many medical challenges, is still an active cyclist; and WHEREAS, the group will face physical and mental challenges, averaging approximately 62 miles a day, riding through cold winding mountain ranges and arid valleys; and WHEREAS, during the journey the Team will visit local nursing homes to share their experiences and to show a more positive image of the Golden Generation. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby commend the Golden Generation Cycling Team for its significant accomplishment of cycling 1,234 miles down the Pacific Coast and demonstrating an active lifestyle for seniors and recognize International Golden Generation Day on Saturday, April Nineteenth, Two Thousand and Fourteen. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Tuesday, April Nineteenth, Two Thousand and Fourteen. __________________________________ Gilbert Wong, Mayor
