HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 Arbor Day 4-1-2014 Proclamation - Word - 03.19.2014PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the City of Cupertino wishes to show its support for Arbor Day, an event that began in 1872, when J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and WHEREAS, this event is designed for the local community to participate in Arbor Day activities; and WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, lower our heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife; and WHEREAS, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community; and WHEREAS, the Tree / Right of Way Division of the City’s Department of Public Works and the Public Affairs Department, and other interested residents, have organized an annual Arbor Day celebration; and WHEREAS, Arbor Day will be celebrated on Saturday, April Fifth, Two Thousand and Fourteen, at the Civic Center Plaza from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in conjunction with the Earth Day event. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby acknowledge April Fifth, Two Thousand and Fourteen as Arbor Day and urge all residents, businesses and organizations to engage in activities that support efforts to protect our trees and to observe this day by planting trees and participating in a tree planting ceremony. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Tuesday, April First, Two Thousand and Fourteen. __________________________________ Gilbert Wong, Mayor
