HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 St Andrew Armenian Church Proclamation - PDF - 04.23.2015PXOCLAW.3TION WHEREAS, one and one-half million men, women and children of Armenian descent were victims of the brutal genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire from 1915 to 1923, inclusive; and WHEREAS, the Armenian Genocide and massacre of the Armenian people have been recognized as an attempt to eliminate all traces of a thriving and noble civilization over 3,000 years old; and WHEREAS, to this day, revisionists still inexplicably deny the existence of these horrific events; and WHEREAS, recognition of the 100th anniversary of this genocide is crucial to preventing the repetition of future genocides and educating people about the atrocities connected to these tragic events; and WHEREAS, the St. Andrew Armenian Church was established in Cupertino on Stelling Road some 50 years ago and has provided a home to Armenian Christians throughout the South Bay ever since; and WHEREAS, the Church brought the community together on Sunday, April 19, 2015 to commemorate and ensure that the Armenian Genocide is not forgotten. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino do hereby recognize the St. AndrewArmenian Church on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 -1923. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Friday, April Twenty -Fourth, Two Thousand and Fifteen. Rod Sinks, Mayor
