WHEREAS, as a Mill Valley City Council Member, Shawn Marshall pioneered
Community Choice Energy in California, having served on the 2007 task force that
ultimately formed the Marin Energy Authority, now known as Marin Clean Energy, and
served as its founding Vice Chair from 2009-2012; and
WHEREAS, Marin Clean Energy demonstrated that Community Choice Energy could
deliver much greener electricity to residents and businesses at comparable prices to
incumbent investor-owned utilities; and
WHEREAS, despite sustained, well-financed opposition, Shawn has worked tirelessly to
fight for legislation in Sacramento to enable more communities to enjoy these benefits;
and
WHEREAS, Shawn established LEAN Energy U.S. to guide other cities and counties
toward Community Choice Energy, so far advising ten regional efforts including ours,
and created a tidal wave in the entire Bay Area and beyond, and will speak on
Community Choice Energy at the UN Climate Conference in Paris in December; and
WHEREAS, the Climate Action Plans developed by local cities including Cupertino
recognize Community Choice Energy as the most effective step by far we can take to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change, bigger than all the
other steps combined we can take as cities.
NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby
recognize Shawn Marshall
and recognize the profound difference she is making in fighting climate change.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of
Cupertino to be affixed this Wednesday, November Eighteen, Two Thousand and Fifteen.
