WHEREAS, the month of September is nationally recognized as Ovarian Cancer
Awareness Month and the State of California will be proclaiming September as
Ovarian Cancer Month statewide this year; and
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society (ACS) estimates approximately 21,290
women will receive a new diagnosis of ovarian cancer and 14,180 women will die
from ovarian cancer this year; and
WHEREAS, ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among
women and there are no reliable screening tests available, making detection of
early stage ovarian cancer only 20 percent; and
WHEREAS, the exact causes of ovarian cancer are unknown, although genetic
changes are a risk factor for some women.
NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do
hereby recognize September as
Ovarian CancerYtwareness Vonth
and encourage all residents to learn more about this type of cancer to better
educate themselves and their loved ones about the importance of early detection
and prevention to live a healthy life.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the
City of Cupertino to be affixed this Friday, September Fourth, Two Thousand and
Fifteen.
