WHEREAS, Joan Scott Brown is an important treasure in our community and will
celebrate her 100th birthday on April 10th; and
WHEREAS, Joan Scott Brown was born in Reading, England during the middle of World
War I, quickly demonstrated her artistic talent gaining Royal Society of Arts Certificates in
English, French, Mathematics and Music, ultimately becoming a mechanical engineer; and
WHEREAS, Joan Scott Brown worked in the office of General Aircraft Ltd. during World
War II where her engineering tasks included working on the tail section of the Hamilcar
assault glider used in D Day landings, lived in London during the Blitz nonchalantly
surviving incendiary bombs hitting her car roof (luckily it bounced off harmlessly),
another setting the roof of her house on fire and later one landing in the backyard which
caused no damage since it failed to detonate; and
WHEREAS, Joan Scott Brown met her husband Peter at General Aircraft, married in 1948,
set up home in a rickety old 30 ft. converted lifeboat on the river Thames, moved to Reno
Nevada in 1968 when Bill Lear, of Lear Jet fame, offered Peter a job; and
WHEREAS, Joan Scott Brown moved to Cupertino in 2014 with her paintings and detailed
miniature rooms and amazes all by taking the stairs rather than the elevator earning her
the nickname "Speedy Gonzales"; and
WHEREAS, Joan Scott Brown will be honored with a 100th birthday celebration with
family and friends from around the globe on Saturday, April 9, 2016.
NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby
congratulate
Joan Scott Brown
on the auspicious occasion of her 100th Birthday.
