WHEREAS, on November Twelfth, Two Thousand and Sixteen, the City of
Cupertino recognizes the Third Annual Chinese Star Contest co-sponsored by the
Santa Clara County Office of Education and the Confucius Institute at San
Francisco State University; and
WHEREAS, in September 2015, President Barack Obama unveiled the 1 Million
Strong initiative, which aims to increase the number of U.S. children learning
Mandarin in school from 200,000 to 1 million by 2020; and
WHEREAS, the Chinese Star Contest encourages the exploration of Chinese
language, art, poetry and culture by K-12 students; and
WHEREAS, more than 350 students submitted more than 500 entries to compete
in five contest categories: Calligraphy (pen/brush), Painting/Drawing, Chinese
Poetry Recital, Speech, and Team Video; and
WHEREAS, this event provides an opportunity for students to develop global
awareness and apply 21st century skills; and
WHEREAS, this event provides a platform for students to show their multi-lingual
talents and language proficiency in Chinese, and to enhance friendship between
the U.S. and China.
