HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 Affordable Housing Week Proclamations - pdf - 05.16.2016PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, affordable housing is a regional issue that requires regional solutions and participation from all cities and the County; and WHEREAS, Santa Clara county is home to more than 6,500 individuals experiencing homelessness on any given night, 71% of whom are unsheltered; and WHEREAS, Santa Clara County is ranked the 3rd most expensive housing region in North America, with median rental prices averaging $3,500 and median home purchase prices nearing $1 million; and WHEREAS, like-minded organizations and individuals throughout Santa Clara County are dedicated to providing safe, stable, permanent and affordable housing to all members of the community, as well as continuing to bring the issue of affordable housing to the forefront of discussion in Silicon Valley despite rising rents, the dissolution of Redevelopment Agencies, and sequestration of housing assistance programs; and WHEREAS, SV@Home and its partner agencies have organized 24 Affordable Housing Week events to showcase the crucial value of, and need for, affordable housing in San Jose and Santa Clara County. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby proclaim the week of May Thirteenth through May Twentieth, Two Thousand and Sixteen as Affordable Housing Week in Santa Clara County to recognize the successful efforts of SV@Home, Housing Trust Silicon Valley, Silicon Valley Leadership Group, and other nonprofit agencies working to increase affordable housing opportunities in Santa Clara County. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Tuesday, May Seventeenth, Two Thousand and Sixteen. __________________________________ Barry Chang, Mayor PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Santa Clara county is home to more than 7,500 individuals experiencing homelessness on any given night, 74% of whom are unsheltered; and WHEREAS, like-minded organizations and individuals throughout Santa Clara County are dedicated to providing safe, stable, permanent and affordable housing to all members of the community, as well as continuing to bring the issue of affordable housing to the forefront of discussion in Silicon Valley despite rising rents, the dissolution of Redevelopment Agencies, and sequestration of housing assistance programs; and WHEREAS, a recent cost-of-living increase made Silicon Valley eighty-seven percent (87%) more expensive than the U.S. average; and WHEREAS, fourteen organizations have organized fifteen Affordable Housing Week events to showcase the crucial value of, and need for, affordable housing in San Jose and Santa Clara County. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby proclaim the week of May Sixteenth through May twenty-third, Two Thousand and Fourteen Affordable Housing Week in Santa Clara County and call upon all members of our community to support this endeavor and participate in the celebration of the successful efforts of Housing Trust Silicon Valley, Silicon Valley Leadership Group, the City of San Jose and the County of Santa Clara. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Tuesday, May Twentieth, Two Thousand and Fourteen. __________________________________ Gilbert Wong, Mayor PROCLAMATION WHEREAS: Each year, thousands of Silicon Valley families struggle to find an affordable home in one of the most expensive housing markets in the nation, and as a result, the Santa Clara County Collaborative on Affordable Housing and Homeless Issues has developed a regional campaign to educate the public about affordable housing opportunities and to find solutions to the affordable housing crisis; and WHEREAS: This collaborative, composed of: the City of San José, the Housing Authority of Santa Clara County, Charities Housing, Habitat for Humanity, Santa Clara County Housing Trust, Citibank, and Wells Fargo Bank, among others, has organized the third Annual Affordable Housing Week in Cupertino and Santa Clara County to raise public awareness of housing issues; and WHEREAS: Affordable Housing Week will be celebrated with events such as seminars, workshops and forums to encourage broad community discussion of best practices, policies, opportunities and solutions to help local families participate in the American Dream for decent homes they can afford; NOW, THEREFORE, the Mayor and City Council of the City of Cupertino, do hereby proclaim the week May 13 through 20, 2006 as AFFORDABLE HOUSING WEEK in Cupertino and call upon all members of our community to support this endeavor and participate in the celebration of the successful efforts of the City of Cupertino and its partners to improve access to affordable housing in Cupertino and our neighboring communities.
