HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 Affordable Housing Week 2017PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, affordable housing is a regional issue that requires regional solutions and participation from all cities and the County; and WHEREAS, Santa Clara County ranks among the most expensive housing regions in the United States, with median rental prices averaging approximately $3,500 and median home values nearing $1 million; and WHEREAS, it requires a household income of $140,000 to afford the median rent, which is out of reach for teachers, health workers, retail salespeople, construction workers, and other employees needed to ensure a good quality of life, even for many dual-income households; and WHEREAS, the lack of available, affordable housing requires that workers drive long distances to get to jobs, increasing transportation congestion and impacting air quality; and WHEREAS, likeminded organizations and individuals throughout Santa Clara County are dedicated to providing safe, stable, permanent and affordable housing to all members of the community, as well as continuing to bring the issue of affordable housing to the forefront of discussion in Silicon Valley; and WHEREAS, SV@Home and its partner agencies have organized over 20 Affordable Housing Week events to showcase the crucial value of, and need for, affordable housing throughout Santa Clara County; WHEREAS, through the adoption of the City of Cupertino Housing Mitigation Program in 1992, the City has secured 259 total below market rate units, of which 121 units are for-sale units and 142 are rental units; and WHEREAS, the City of Cupertino is hosting a First Time Homebuyer Workshop as part of Affordable Housing week to provide education and resources to the community. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino do hereby proclaim the week of May 12th through May 19th of 2017 as Affordable Housing Week to recognize the successful efforts SV@Home, Housing Trust Silicon Valley, Silicon Valley Leadership Group, West Valley Community Services, Working Partnerships, the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley, Sacred Heart Community Services, Destination: Home and other nonprofit agencies working to increase affordable housing opportunities in Santa Clara County. Passed and Adopted on the Sixteenth of May, Two Thousand and Seventeen.
