HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 2017 STAR Awards Proclamations - pdf - 05.20.2017PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on Saturday, May Twentieth, Two Thousand and Seventeen, the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual STAR Awards at a gala banquet at the Juniper Hotel; and WHEREAS, based on achievements and contributions in areas such as civic and community service, education, and governmental affairs, nominees are recognized for significant service, teamwork and achievements in the community; and WHEREAS, the STAR Award recipients for the President’s Award is Assemblymember Evan Low and his District Office Staff; and WHEREAS, Assemblyman Evan Low and his Staff have been a great support on initiatives within the Cupertino community; and WHEREAS, Initiatives that support below market rate housing for low income families, veterans, and seniors are only one of the many examples of how Evan Low’s Office and Staff aim to better the community; and WHEREAS, the support from Evan Low’s Office and Staff to WVCS increased even more when their district office moved only a block away from WVCS in Cupertino. Evan Low’s Office and Staff has been a champion on WVCS programs from assisting in our food pantry, to helping with WVCS’s Back to School program, to so much more; and WHEREAS, Evan Low’s Office and Staff raised the bar in connecting WVCS with local fire departments in joining WVCS annual Holiday Program that serves WVCS low-income clients. Together, Evan Low’s Office and Staff led an activities room that brought holiday cheer to families as well as brought families closer together. Evan Low’s Office and Staff made this holiday season a warm one for these low income families thanks to their generous donation of arts and craft supplies, as well as time and energy at the event; and NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby honor and recognize Assemblymember Evan Low and his District Office Staff for helping serve the low-income families within our community displays their overall and continuous concern for the community City of Cupertino. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Saturday, May Twentieth, Two Thousand and Seventeen. __________________________ Savita Vaidhyanathan Mayor PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on Saturday, May Twentieth, Two Thousand and Seventeen, the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual STAR Awards at a gala banquet at the Juniper Hotel; and WHEREAS, based on achievements and contributions in areas such as civic and community service, education, and governmental affairs, nominees are recognized for significant service, teamwork and achievements in the community; and WHEREAS, the STAR Award recipient for Citizen of the Year is Barbara Nunes; and WHEREAS, Barbara is the epitome of a true volunteer, always willing to help whenever needed; and WHEREAS, she served for many years first has a teacher and then as principal at Cupertino High and was a member and officer in Quota International of Cupertino; and WHEREAS, she was a former member of the West Valley Community Service Board and a current member of the Fremont Union High School Board of Education over the past 12 years; and WHEREAS, Barbara currently volunteers with the Cupertino Education Kiddies Holiday Shopping Spree projects and has served as coordinator, worker and organizer of each event and program. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby commend and recognize Barbara Nunes for her leadership role in making Cupertino a vibrant and caring Community. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Saturday, May Twentieth, Two Thousand and Seventeen. __________________________ Savita Vaidhyanathan Mayor PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on Saturday, May Twentieth, Two Thousand and Seventeen, the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual STAR Awards at a gala banquet at the Juniper Hotel; and WHEREAS, based on achievements and contributions in areas such as civic and community service, education, and governmental affairs, nominees are recognized for significant service, teamwork and achievements in the community; and WHEREAS, the STAR Award recipient for Business of the Year is Northwest YMCA; and WHEREAS, Northwest YMCA is a hidden gem in Cupertino and one of the city's largest employers; and WHEREAS, The Northwest Y represents the cities of Cupertino and Sunnyvale, providing a host of services and programs that build healthier, safer, and stronger community; and WHEREAS, their programming focuses on nurturing the potential of children, helping people live healthier lives, and supporting our neighborhoods; and WHEREAS, whether they are providing day care, summer learning programs, summer camps, water safety classes, programming for adult cancer survivors, or general fitness and wellness opportunities for residents of any age - the Northwest Y fills crucial needs within the Cupertino community. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby commend and recognize Northwest YMCA for promoting a healthier lifestyle, and providing various programs in the City of Cupertino. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Saturday, May Twentieth, Two Thousand and Seventeen. __________________________ Savita Vaidhyanathan Mayor PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on Saturday, May Twentieth, Two Thousand and Seventeen, the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual STAR Awards at a gala banquet at the Juniper Hotel; and WHEREAS, based on achievements and contributions in areas such as civic and community service, education, and governmental affairs, nominees are recognized for significant service, teamwork and achievements in the community; and WHEREAS, the STAR Award recipient for Citizen of the Year is Richard Abdalah; and WHEREAS, Richard has practiced law in Cupertino for over 30 years; and WHEREAS, he was president of the Chamber of Commerce in 1997 and 2015; and WHEREAS, he has been a member of the Cupertino Rotary Club since 1990; and WHEREAS, Richard received a CREST Award from the City and served on the Cupertino Housing Commission; and served on the Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation for 12 years and was president and board member of the Sunnyvale Cupertino Bar Assn for many years; and WHEREAS, he has worked tirelessly for the city of Cupertino and the business community. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby commend and recognize Richard Abdalah for his leadership role in making Cupertino a vibrant and caring Community. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Saturday, May Twentieth, Two Thousand and Seventeen. __________________________ Savita Vaidhyanathan Mayor PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on Saturday, May Twentieth, Two Thousand and Seventeen, the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual STAR Awards at a gala banquet at the Juniper Hotel; and WHEREAS, based on achievements and contributions in areas such as civic and community service, education, and governmental affairs, nominees are recognized for significant service, teamwork and achievements in the community; and WHEREAS, the STAR Award recipient for Small Business of the Year is The California Cricket Academy; and WHEREAS, The California Cricket Academy was started in Cupertino in 2003 by Hemant & Kinjal Buch (parents in Cupertino) and was the first cricket academy & youth league for children from 6-17 in the USA; and WHEREAS, their coaches are professionally trained and impart world class coaching & leadership training to young boys and girls; and WHEREAS, the players have traveled to various countries as well as across the USA & won many tournaments including in England, India, & Canada. CCA has introduced the Cupertino community & the Bay Area to a sport that was new to the community in 2003 and has opened opportunities for cultural diversity and youth training that has enriched Cupertino and our youth. NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby commend and recognize the The California Cricket Academy for being instrumental in establishing and introducing the Cupertino community to the sport of cricket and for teaching the youth about sportsmanship. IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of Cupertino to be affixed this Saturday, March Nineteenth, Two Thousand and Sixteen. __________________________ Savita Vaidhyanathan Mayor PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, on Saturday, May Twentieth, Two Thousand and Seventeen, the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual STAR Awards at a gala banquet at the Juniper Hotel; and WHEREAS, based on achievements and contributions in areas such as civic and community service, education, and governmental affairs, nominees are recognized for significant service, teamwork and achievements in the community; and WHEREAS, the STAR Award is in memory of Tommy Schwe; and WHEREAS, Gin-Lu Tommy Shwe was born in the Yunnan Province of China in 1946 and his family moved to Burma in 1949 due to the communist regime’s rise to power in China; and WHEREAS, he started his engineering studies at the Rangoon Institute of Technology and after 1 year transferred to National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan where he earned his BS and MS in Electrical Engineering and met his wife, Chin-Hsia Lee; and WHEREAS, Tommy and his wife move to the United States in 1972 to study at the University of Oregon where he earned his MS in Computer Science. They moved to Santa Clara County and his first job was at Measurex; and WHEREAS, Tommy earned his third MS degree in Engineering Management from Santa Clara University; and WHEREAS, he would go on to have numerous other careers in real estate, small business ownership, and corporate executive positions, but it was his passion for community service and involvement that really drove him; and WHEREAS, in 1985, Tommy was elected to the Cupertino Union School District Board of Trustees. He was the first Chinese American elected to public office in the South Bay/Silicon Valley Area and was a pioneer and trailblazer for the numerous others that would follow. He is most well-known for his involvement in community organizations a few of which included: Cupertino Union School District – Board of Trustees (1985-1993), Board President (1989) Cupertino Community Services – Board of Directors (1986-1992), Board President (1990) Cupertino Chamber of Commerce – Board of Directors (1988-1992), Vice President (1991) Foothill/De Anza College Foundation – Board of Directors (1988-1992) Silicon Valley Chinese School in Cupertino – Founder and Board President (1978- 1981) Asian Business League of Silicon Valley – Board of Directors (1988-1992) NOW, therefore, be it resolved, that the Mayor and City Council of Cupertino, do hereby recognize in memoriam Tommy Schwe for helping build relationships and organizations that define Cupertino.
