Proclamation
WHEREAS, The City of Cupertino wishes to recognize those young men and
women from the community who fought and risked their lives in
the Persian Gulf conflict; and
WHEREAS,
who showed outstanding valor in the face of extreme danger; and
WHEREAS,
armored vehicle (LAV) in the battle for Kuwait, is especially
deserving of recognition for courageous efforts during the U.S.
land war involvement; and
WHEREAS,
reconnaissance ahead of the main strike force, and this put him in
several life-threatening situations; and
WHEREAS,
known as “The Gates of Hell,” found his vehicle in the midst of an
Iraqi bunker complex, traveled through thick, black smoke, and,
when the air cleared, came face to face with two heavy armored
tanks; and
WHEREAS,
that allowed him to come through his ordeal with no physical
injury and his composure and ingenuity under intense pressure
subsequently served as an inspiration for those fighting with him.
THEREFORE,
issue this Proclamation of May 20th, 1991, and commend:
Marine Corporal Paul Haayer
for his outstanding service to his country and community and wish him continued good
fortune and success in all future endeavors.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of
Cupertino to be affixed this Tuesday, February First, Two Thousand and Twenty Two.
