Proclamation
WHEREAS,
WHEREAS,
75th anniversary of the bombings of Japanese cities Hiroshima, our
Sister City Toyokawa, and Nagasaki, respectively; and
Shortly after the bombings, the end of World War II ushered in an
era of continual peace between the United States and Japan; in
1965, President Dwight D. Eisenhower created organizations like
Sister Cities International to achieve peace through mutual respect,
understanding, and cooperation among countries; and
WHEREAS,
U.S. and Japan is present right here in our own city, where we
have enjoyed a wonderfully enriching cross-cultural relationship
with our Sister City, Toyokawa, since 1978; and
WHEREAS,
between the United States and Japan, including the
groundbreaking relationship between Saint Paul, Minnesota and
Nagasaki, Japan—which was the first post-war Sister City
relationship between the U.S. and an Asian city; and
WHEREAS,
representing peace, and in Japan, where New Year bell ringing
marks a new era; and
WHEREAS,
Toyokawa once again, as well as its wish for lasting peace.
THEREFORE,
proclaim the week of August 5 through 12, 2021, as
Cupertino-Toyokawa Peace Week
and this occasion is being commemorated at City Hall on August 5, 2021, at 4:15 p.m.,
coinciding with the moment an atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima 75 years ago.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the City of
Cupertino to be affixed this Wednesday, August Fifth, Two Thousand and Twenty One.
