HomeMy WebLinkAbout047 AAPI Scanned Proclamation - PDF - 04.25.2024CITY OF CUPERTINO WHEREAS, The City of Cupertino wishes to recognize Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who contribute to our country's economy and supplement the unique character of our nation; and WHEREAS, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have provided Cupertino and the United States with a unique cultural influence; and WHEREAS, The U.S. began recognizing May as Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month in 1992, which was fueled by the Asian American activism movement resulting from the murder of Vincent Chin in 1982; and WHEREAS, We have seen Asian American and Pacific Islander leaders, scientists, and teachers, who have also campaigned and fought to create a fairer and more just society for all Americans; and WHEREAS, On May 18, 2019, elected officials recognized the day as AAPI Day Against Bullying and Hate to combat the rise of discrimination against the community, which was further escalated due to the COVID 19 pandemic; and WHEREAS, The Cupertino City Council dedicates the month of May to all our Asian American and Pacific Islander families, friends, and neighbors who have helped make Cupertino great, as we denounce all hate aimed towards this community. THEREFORE, I, Mayor Sheila Mohan, and the Cupertino City Council do hereby proclaim the month of May as il//' �/Wiq/ea/1t and ciia', 9'/9e VKf,% in the City of Cupertino and encourage the community to celebrate the contributions that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made to our state and nation.
