RESOLUTION NO. 406
A RESOLUTION OF THE ARCHITECTURAL AND SITE APPROVAL COMMITTEE OF THE CITY OF
CUPERTINO RECOi"NDING THAT THE FOLLOWING SIGNING GUIDELINES BE ADOPTED BY
THE CITY COUNCIL AS AN INTERIM MEASURETO KEGULAIE SIGNING UNTIL th.! flNAt- -
SIGN ORDINANCE CAN BE ADOPTED.
The purpose of signing in the City of Cupertino is to locate and
identify business establishments within the community. Point of
sale advertising is of secondary importance from the public point
of view. In keeping with this policy the amount and type of sign-
ing for businesses will be evaluated in relationship to Sign
Ordinance No. 353 and the following sign guidelines:
Sign Dimensions
1. Unless there are unusual circumstances relating to the building
as stated subsequently, the total sign area should not be greater
than 120 sq, ft.
2. Wall signs should be no larger than 80 sq. ft.
3. Individual ground signs should contain a sign surface no greater
than 60 sq. ft. per side.
Height of Ground Signs
1. The height of ground signs, as specified in Section 6.046, shall
represent a maximum height.
2. Unless the following circumstances exist, a sign height should.
not exceed 10 ft.
a. That the proposed establishment represents a special use
requiring special signing.
b. That the topographical features unique to the site or
location of the sign on the site demand the higher sign.
3. Low profile ground signs are the preferred sign type. This is
defined as a sign with a maximum height range of 6 ft. to 8 ft.
The signing for the Sandpiper Restaurant, the Bank of America
.and the industrial buildings in Vallco Park and West Valley
Industrial Park are indicative of the desired sign size.
Materials and Color
1. All signing should bear a relationship to the architectural features
of the building which the sign identifies.
2. Signs should utilize sign cans, letter background and letter color
that will be subdued in intensity and will not provide a harsh glare
during the day or when illuminated at night.

3. The colors used for signs should be warm, earth tones, like light
-may browns, gold, muted green, beige,etc. rather than glaring fahy;;
colors like purple, pinks, bright blue and red. If these colors
are to be used, the intensity of the illumination shall be reduced
_.__accordingly.
4. Samples of the proposed materials and colors shall be brought before
the Committee. Colors shall he shown in natural and illuminated state.
Criteria for Evaluating Sign Area
The Architectural and Site Approval Committee will consider the following:
1. The distance of the building or the sign from the street.
2. Whether the building is an isolated store or part of a total
shopping center or complex,
3. Whether the building has exposure from all four sides to the
street.
4. The relationship of the size of the sign to the wall on which
it is mounted. -.
5. The readability of the sign relative to the number and size of
letters and viewing conditions.
6. The physical characteristics of the sita and landscaping.
7. The compatability of the sign to the architecture of the building.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 5th day of June, 1974, at a regular meeting of the
Architectural and Site Approval Committee of the City of Cupertino, State of
California, by the following roll call vote:
