Of this amount, $107 million is allocated to the Citizens' Option for Public Safety (COPS) program and $107 million is allocated to counties for specified juvenile justice programs. USE OF FUNDS Cities are required to appropriate COPS revenues to fund front line municipal police services. This can include anti-gang and community crime prevention programs. The funds are to be appropriated pursuant to a written request from i:he Chief of Police or the Chief Administrator of the law enforcement agency that provides police services for that city. Capt. Terry Calderone has requested that the $100,000 be used to fund a second School Resource Officer for the 2008-09 school year. The Fremont Union High School District and Cupertino Union School District have each contributed $10,000 to cover the remaining expense for the second officer. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the City Council accept the sheriff' s request for the expenditure of COPS funds. Knapp City Manager 7-i RESOLUTION NO 08-166 '~~~~ A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CUPERTINO APPROVING REQUEST FROM SHERIFF FOR USE OF THE CITIZENS' OPTION FOR PUBLIC SAFETY (COPS) PROGRAM FUNDS OF $100,000 WHEREAS, the 2008 Budget Act provided $214 million in General Fund monies in 2008-09; and WHEREAS, the Budget Act establishes the Citizens' Option for Public Safety (COPS) program and appropriates $107 million from the state general fund for the 2008-09 fiscal year and the City of Cupertino's per capita share is $100,000 for fiscal year 2008-09; and WHEREAS, the COPS program provides funding for local agencies for the purpose of ensuring public safety; and WHEREAS, cities are required to appropriate COPS revenues to fund front line municipal police services which can include anti-gang and community crime prevention programs; and WHEREAS, these funds are to be appropriated pursuant to a written request from the Chief of Police or the Chief Administrator of the law enforcement agency that provides police services for that city. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Cupertino hereby approves the Sheriff's request for the expenditures of Citizens' Option for Public Safety (COPS) funds.
