Accidents are extremely underreported to the police: most estmates say only about 10% are reported, with level of injury the determining factor STUDENT SURVEY • Quick CRITERIA • Easily used, familiar • Easily found (link) • Create a Google Form SOLUTION • Have laminated sheets placed at the bike racks with QR codes and short URL to go to survey coo Highlight : Education Middl e S ch ool Bicycle Workshop at Lawson Middle School ,..„;i I by Seema Lindsko,. -,2 t, -r. ).,.. „--_- . g ,,„ .,„. ‘,. , 104j _- °-0' 4Is - — if '` t 4 _, :171,---;',,\_. p • ‘_ ,,,._:;,-:. After the workshop, some kids were escorted back to Lawson, while others went home on their own School Highlight : Lawson Bike Safety Workshop The workshop was a huge success. A total of 42 kids signed up after just once email to Lawson parents and one post in the Lawson Bike Parents group. i6 kids ended up participating Feedback from the kids and parents was overwhelmingly positive A few parents of kids who weren't able to participate are asking us to hold the workshop again Interesting tidbit: a couple of parents asked if we teach adults to ride as they'd like to be able to ride with their kids. School Highlight : Lawson Bike Safet" Worksho ■ Learnings: • Parents really value teaching bike safety to their kids • Many of the kids who participated in the workshop don't currently bike to school, primarily because of safety concerns, though their parents have a desire to let them bike to school • We should consider what else we can do to make parents and kids feel safer about biking to school - whether it be events, training, equipment, or infrastructure • Kids need a neighborhood ride to solidify their understanding of bike safety. A bike rodeo around a parking lot is not enough. Parents recognize that and specifically requested a neighborhood ride be part of the workshop • Schools are not comfortable hosting a bike workshop if there's a neighborhood ride component because of liability concerns. Hosting the event at the YMCA worked out well for us. Two liability waivers are required - city waiver and YMCA waiver ▪ The whole event took a full 2 hours • Kids loved the little giveaways we had (notebooks and pens). It would have been great to do safety related giveaways but we didn't think of it © School Highlight : Lawson Bike SafetyWorkshop .,,,.....,„,_ _Li ,..,..,, ., ._.:„..,..„..)„,.., ::., 7,4,rfor.,„..„..„„. . . . .. ,,,.....„... , .. ., ..,, . ... .,, ,,., ..._ .,,,,, _.„...., , . x 3 G ett i n n. g9 - # ` o i E , /. .`,}i bpi ' 1 readyto ride `V ` / -- # ,„, k out from i Pi Lawson f , x 77Tr t ry L -4,,, 5` ,,"' i1 I. ■-'.a 1 of '''''''',.- iv, , d ' ' ' _. a, School Highlight : Dawson Bike SafetyWorkshop ,._ --Ili NNW MO Discussion Ii t Y i I 1 , _ , on Bike e. .
