After the workshop, some kids were escorted back to Lawson, while others went home on their own School Highlight : Lawson Bike Safety Workshop This is the second time we have done this workshop after the huge success of our first workshop in March 2o1g. A total of 13 kids participated Feedback from the kids and parents was very positive Most participants in the workshop are 6th and 7th graders whose parents are trying to get them ready to go to school independently in 8th grade and high school School Highlight : Lawson Bike SafetyWorkshop Learnings Parents really value teaching bike safety to their kids Many of the kids who participated in the workshop don't currently bike to school, primarily because of safety concerns, though their parents have a desire to let them bike to school We should consider what else we can do to make parents and kids feel safer about biking to school — whether it be events, training, equipment, or infrastructure Kids need a neighborhood ride to solidify their understanding of bike safety. A bike rodeo around a parking lot is not enough. Parents recognize that and specifically requested a neighborhood ride be part of the workshop Schools are not comfortable hosting a bike workshop if there's a neighborhood ride component because of liability concerns. Hosting the event at theYMCA worked out well for us. Two liability waivers are required — city waiver and YMCA waiver The whole event took a full 2 hours Kids loved the little give-aways that Cherie brought. We gave out pens, notebooks, and bike lights and most kids put the bike lights on their bikes immediately.
