Removing Police Presence from Safe Routes to School Initiatives Discussion : Enforcement Historic Role of Police Cupertino SR2S The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office has historically provided these services for Cupertino SRzS: • Bike Safety Presentations • Bike Rodeo Participation • Traffic Patrol around Schools at Peak Traffic Times • Collision Data Discussion : Enforcement Why is policing and enforcement in SRTS problematic? • Safety extends beyond traffic safety • Ticketing tends to disproportionately target people of color • Traffic fines disproportionately impact low income people and people of color • As Black Lives Matter Movement has highlighted, black and low income neighborhoods are more likely to be targeted by police • Tickets don't change driver behavior long-term Discussion : Enforcement Alternatives to Enforcement • Invest in what works: • Engineer safe streets • Educate students to walk and bike safely • Invest in Crossing Guards • Automated traffic enforcement • Replace ticketing with community service: restorative justice Discussion : Enforcement Where to Go from Here ?
