Survey History & Purpose
• Cupertino Safe Routes to School has been collecting data on how students travel to
and from school since the fall of 2015. This data helps us to better understand
citywide student transportation trends across all grade levels.
• This data is collected using an in-class survey. Teachers ask their students how they
are traveling to and from school and mark their responses on a Travel Tally
Questionnaire that is provided by the National Safe Routes to School Partnership.
• The information that we collect is used to inform program decision making and
provide data for grant proposals.
• This report summarizes the findings from our most recent fall 2021 survey.

Key Observations and
Takeaways:
Cupertino
TK is only offered in a few central locations,
Schools so many drive
Grade Elementary schools are local so many walk,
especially kinders whose parents must
Comparison escort them to the school entrance
Middle schoolers travel further and are more
independent, so bike and carpool more
High school commutes are further and often
cross major barriers, so there is less walking,
more biking and driving, and some transit
