Dear City Council,
I realize this is a late email but I am writing to encourage you to support the Class IV
bike lanes on Stevens Creek Blvd. There are many cyclist such as myself who run
errands, attend meetings, etc. in the community and who commute by bike.
I'd like the council to look at the big picture and envision what kind of vibrant
community we would like to see for our selves and for the next generation. Complete
Streets, Vision Zero, active transportation, however you want to look at it,
consideration of all modes of transport makes our community more welcoming to all
who share our streets.
Cupertino is also not in a bubble. The Class IV lanes would connect with Santa Clara
and San Jose. These cities are also considering improving their section of the
corridor. We don't want to be like Santa Clara County voting against BART way back
in the 60's. Please consider the bigger picture.

Helene Davis

Dear Mayor Mohan, Vice-Mayor Fruen and council members,
Please keep funding for protected Class IV bike lanes on Stevens Creek Blvd in the list of projects to be funded by
SB1 revenues. Protected bike lanes on Stevens Creek Blvd are key towards improving cycling safety in Cupertino -
they have been a priority for cycling safety improvements for eight years and they need to be implemented. Stevens
Creek Blvd is a High Injury Corridor and accounts for a significant percentage of severe injuries and fatal crashes
over the last decade.
The 2016 Bike Plan prioritized safety improvements for this High Injury Corridor and recommended protected bike
lanes for its entire length to be completed in phases. It is a Tier 1 project in both the bike and pedestrian
transportation plans.
With approved new housing that will generate more traffic, we must find solutions to encourage residents to use
alternate transportation, including bikes. It is imperative to make the community feel safer to use bikes for
commuting to school and work. Stevens Creek Blvd is an important artery for commuting. Please continue to
support and prioritize the funding for protected class IV bike lanes on Stevens Creek Blvd.
Thank you,

Respected Mayor Mohan, Vice-Mayor Fruen and council members,
I am a 25 year resident of Cupertino, and have had a wonderful and rewarding career here,
living and working at Kaiser Santa Clara medical center. I recently retired from my professional
medical career as an Oculoplastic surgeon. I had the fortune to commute to work by bike for the
last 10 years or so. I would have biked even more if it was not for the fact that our roads are not
that safe. My children studied in local schools, and when in high school (Monta Vista), they were
biked to school. That was a great bonus for us as parents, as both my wife and myself are
surgeons, and it did give us some freedom from the hassle of driving them to school daily. It was
of course at a great cost, as we were always worried about their safety on the roads. And,
unfortunately, I was first hand to almost witness a fatality on Bubb road, it happened as I was
stuck in my car on Bubb, ( I was at September and Bubb) commuting to work by car on that sad
day. I myself have had a few close calls on my bike, a distracted young man reversed from his
driveway on to Stelling, and knocked me down on to the street, I would have been run over, if
there was any traffic at that time, my lucky stars, the roads were empty.
Over the years, I have seen really good improvements for safe biking in our city. Kudos to the
people working to getting it done. One of the best improvements was when McClellnan road got
protected lanes, and soon after a segment of Stevens Creek Blvd got it too. You cannot describe
the difference that makes to people on bikes. It is day and night. And, I am now patiently awaiting
the next phase of this project, to get the rest of Stevens Creek blvd protected bike lanes. This will
only get more people on bikes, less car trips, more kids on bikes to school, less traffic jams for
school drop offs and pickups, less pollution, better health and the benefits are endless.
What are we waiting for, let’s get this done- this is Vision Zero. Let’s not be blind to this fact.

Good afternoon, city council members,
This is Jian He, a Cupertino resident near Blackberry Farm and a board member for a local
volunteer-based group Walk Bike Cupertino. I heard you will make a big decision for
the Stevens Creek Boulevard protected bike lane project tonight. I am writing to support this
important safety improvement.
I bike from home to the Union Church of Cupertino regularly, and many times, speeding cars
were passing by me on my bike. It feels very risky and scary. With protected bike lanes, more
people would feel safe to bike on this major street to reach parks, stores and churches along
the way.
Thank you so much for your good world for our city! You are truly public servants who care
about our community!

Blessings,
Jian

Dear Mayor Mohan, Vice-Mayor Fruen
and council members,
Please keep funding to protect our
citizens who travel on Stevens Creek. It
would appear to be callous and uncaring
to ignore safety, injuries and deaths on
Stevens Creek Blvd. Please vote to keep
the funding.
Please keep funding for protected Class
IV bike lanes on Stevens Creek Blvd in
the list of projects to be funded by SB1
revenues. This is one of the most
dangerous streets for cyclists in the city
and has been listed as a priority for
cycling safety improvements by the city
since 2016.
Stevens Creek Blvd has been
identified as a High Injury Corridor,
accounting for a significant
percentage of severe injuries and fatal
crashes in the city. From 2012 to
2021, the corridor reported a total of
260 injury collisions, including 16
severe injuries. The majority of these
occurred between Wolfe and I-85 in
the Phase 2 stretch that is being
recommended for SB1 funding.
Unsafe speeding was a common
factor leading to these severe injuries,
followed by traffic signals and sign
violations.
Out of the 48 intersections in
Cupertino where fatal or injury
crashes occurred between 2012 and
2021, seven of them are on Stevens
Creek Boulevard, making it one of the
city streets with the highest number of
dangerous intersections.
The 2016 Bike Plan prioritized safety
improvements to this High Injury
Corridor and recommended protected
bike lanes for the entire length of the
corridor which are being completed in
phases. It is a Tier 1 project in BOTH
the Bike and Pedestrian
Transportation Plans.
The Cupertino Draft Vision Zero Plan
ranks Stevens Creek Blvd as its
number one recommended project.
Our newly approved Housing Element
will bring 4,588 new homes to our city.
We know that our streets, including
our main arterials, cannot handle a lot
more traffic without ending up in
gridlock. We must look forward to
solutions to encourage residents to
use alternate transportation, including
bikes. This is one way to make these
“attractive choices” per the just
approved Mobility Element in our
General Plan.

Dear Mayor Mohan, Vice-Mayor Fruen and Council Members,
I hope you are doing well today. I am writing in the hopes that today you keep
funding for protected bike lanes on Stevens Creek Boulevard. I urge you to keep
this as a project to be funded by the SB1 grant for a multitude of reasons.
Stevens Creek Boulevard has some of the most accidents in our neighborhood per
year. I, myself, as a frequent cyclist feel almost bare riding along these roads.
Keeping Stevens Creek safe has been a top priority for a very long time. Removing
these bike lanes would do a disservice to the Cupertino community at large.
Not only that, but many plans such as Vision Zero emphasize this as being a
paramount priority --- with the hundreds of collisions in the last year, it is imperative
that we take action and dedicate a portion of the SB1 funding to keeping bike
lanes.
With even more homes scheduled to be built in the coming months, traffic will only become
worse. Navigating by bike on Stevens Creek will become both extremely difficult and
dangerous!
Thank you so much for taking my thoughts into consideration.
It is people like you who help make Cupertino the amazing city that it is today!
Thank you for doing all that you do in making our city safe for all.
Sincerely,
Aaryan Doshi (Monta Vista High School)

Subject: Tonight's Agenda Item # 7
Dear Mayor Mohan, Vice-Mayor Fruen and Council Members,
I am writing in regard to tonight’s Agenda Item #7, and more specifically the portion of
the agenda item associated with the Stevens Creek Blvd protected bike lane Phases 2A
and 2B. I strongly advocate that this project be included in the list of projects to be
funded by SB1 revenues. This is an important part of the Cupertino bicycling
infrastructure, making it safer to bicycle on this busy corridor. This project encourages
cycling along this corridor, removing auto traffic, reducing traffic noise and reducing
greenhouse gases. In addition, given the higher density housing that is planned along
this corridor, it is particularly important that cycling over auto use be encouraged as a
mode of transportation.
Thank you for your consideration.
