RE: Arborist Report additional comments- Coast Live Oak at 7954 Sunderland Dr, Cupertino
Dear Mr and Mrs Kerr,
I have listed a summary of the details of the tree to be removed as well as provided a Google Earth image
of the property.
Description of the tree to be removed as stated in my recent arborist report of Dec 3, 2023:
Species: Quercus agrifolia, Coast Live Oak
Location- Northwest corner of the front yard of the lot
DBH (diameter at breast height, 4.5') = 21"
Height is approximately 25' - 30'
Health and structural condition: Very poor. Bark is sloughing off around entire perimeter of the trunk.
There is extensive beetle activity in the trunk. I suspect the tree is already dead and will soon become a
breakage hazard.

As esult of We removaUf the tree, the city is requiring tree replacement to compensate for the loss of

tree canopy in the community. The options offered are specific in that a native tree as replacement is

preferred since a native tree was lost. Due to the size of the tree to be removed, the requirements are that

Approval D.& trees IU*6123lue to be removed was a volunteer and in its mature size, was really a bit too large for
the av b e. s ac. e. Replacing the tree with another Coast Live Oak is not practical from a mature tree size

ge
mature Coast Live Oak extends well beyond this which in the future could create conflict with neighbors
and ultimately undesirable pruning damage to the tree. Additionally, planting a 36" boxed Coast Live Oak
is not nearly as successful long term for tree establishment than is the planting of younger smaller
specimens. There is most definitely not enough space to plant two 24" box trees of most any species that
would reach 25-30'.
2. CA native trees such as CA buckeye, Elderberry, Prunus ilicifolia are not usually available in 36" box
sizes. Cedrus deodara and Cedrus atlantica, should not be listed in the tree ordinance under the heading of
accepted CA native trees, as these tree species are not native to California.
3. My recommendation is to accept option 3 which is to pay the sum of money required by the city to be
submitted to the tree fund for the planting of replacement trees elsewhere in the community.
Please let me know if you need any additional comments,
Sincerely,
Ud-
Ann Northrup
