Application Number(s) Approval Body: Director / Staff Approva I Date 11 /30/23 SignatureArbo*6 Wq Martire Case Manager Prepared For: Fairway VII Association c/o Valery Antonenko 10747 Par Three Drive Cupertino, CA 95014 October 30, 2023 (Updated) Atlas Tree Service, Inc. conducted a survey and assessment on March 31, 2023 of all Redwood trees and others to determine which trees are safe and which trees present a potential hazard to the above noted property. This update is to clarify the recommendation to remove the Redwood trees that could be a future potential hazard. There are 45 living trees tagged and assessed and an additional Redwood tree that has fallen. Tagging helps communicate and gives better understanding of which trees, what work is needed and overall an outlook on the health and suitability of these trees. The trees have been tagged with numbered metal disks and assessed using the guide provided in the book "Trees and Development" by Matheny and Clark. Tag #761 Species: Coastal Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) Diameter @a 4'/2': 41" Spread: 47' Height: 90' Condition: Poor I have observed that this tree's root plate was made up of small combined shallow roots. As these evergreens get dense, their canopies tend to have more end weight within their scaffolding branches, Excessive end weight and excessive load on the ends of these branches causes them to fail. In this case, the tree was susceptible to wind sail from high wind gust coming in from the South-West end of the property in which this tree toppled toward the NE direction. Furthermore, this tree fell away from many structures. High wind gust and saturated soils, along with dense canopy, caused this tree to be highly susceptible to wind gust and excessive mechanical stress within its crown. P.O. Trees either have esea,. ,u,,..... u......._ __ ._ - Signaturego,,j Qatt*RaGJWMarWcqor structure. poor location, poor suitability or lean. I recommend removing trees rated as dale VeW ated between 2-3 should be considered being pruned, thinned and cabled. If this is not possible or if you choose not to keep up with maintenance, then removing the tree itself is an option. Trees rated between 4-5 recommendations would be to perform necessary maintenance to keep trees thriving unless the tree poses a potential hazard of some sort. All trees with codominant stems should be cabled for brace and support. If not thinned and cabled, I believe the following trees should be removed due to poor structure and/or poor location that could be a potential future hazard. Tree #77G Species: Coastal Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) Diameter a7 4'/z': 22" Spread: 20' Height: 75' Condition: Poor *The soil composition around the root crown is very soft. I recommend this tree be removed due to weakened stability. Tree #782 Species: Monterey Pine (Pinus radiara) Diameter @ 4 I/x': 39" Spread: 40' Height: 90' Condition: Poor *This Pine was infested with Western Pine Beetles last summer. Since then this tree has been in decline with extreme amount of decay on the back side of its tree base. This tree should be removed. The following are updated removal recommendations of 11 additional Redwood trees and 1 White Spruce tree. Removal is being reconunended due to poor location, overcrowding, and shallow rooted. As well as many of the trees are in close proximity to a number of homes which raises concerns of possible future hazards. Topping trees is not an ISA practice, nor standard. Trees should not be topped for it can jeopardize the overall health of the tree and will eventually cause the decline of the overall tree itself. Topping trees is not ideal. Pruning Maintenance: I believe that this property's trees will be in a better state if properly maintained. Crown thinning, crown cleaning, cabling, or removal will significantly help the trees stay healthy and safe for the property and community. Re lacement trees: Any replacement trees planted in lieu of removals should be carefully chosen with appropriate tree species, so that there are no overcrowding or potential hazards. Some examples of trees with smaller widespread are: Japanese Maple, White Dogwood, Flowering Plum or White Birch. If you have any questions, you can contact me at (925) 687-3631.
