Dear JTS Tree Expert Inc.
As requested on Wednesday, June 291h, 2022, Kielty Arborist Services LLC was asked to write a
letter supporting the tree removal of three Redwood trees that have outgrown their available
space and are starting to cause various levels of property damage. Your concerns as to the future
health and safety of the three Redwood trees has prompted this report.
Method:
All inspections were made from the ground; the trees were not climbed for this inspection. The
trees in question were located on site by you and will be shown in a Google Earth image within
this report. The trees were then measured for diameter at 54 inches above ground level (DBH or
diameter at breast height). The trees were given a condition rating for form and vitality. The tree
condition ratings are based on 50 percent vitality and 50 percent form, using the following scale.
1 - 29 Very Poor
30 - 49 Poor
50 - 69 Fair
70 - 89 Good
90 - 100 Excellent
The height of the trees was measured using a Nikon Forestry 550 Hypsometer. The spread was
paced off. Comments and recommendations for future maintenance are provided.

Signature +tea w.gi sjjstaip thQ large RRWood trees throughout their entire lifespan. In the past
to reduce triolsiwrffflards areas of concreted have been shaved down or replaced with an
unknown amount of root trauma for the replacement of the concrete. Redwood tree#1 is
damaging the sidewalk, street, and adjacent driveway. Extensive damage to a small wooden
retaining wall has also taken place. Redwood tree#1 is codominant at 50' as the tree has lost
apical dominance. This can raise risk of a leader failure at the top of the canopy but could be
mitigated through pruning. Redwood tree#2 is lifting the adjacent driveway by 6" and is also
starting to cause damage to the sidewalk and street. Redwood tree#3 has had the sidewalk
replaced near the tree in the past with an unknow amount of root trauma. The tree's root crown
has been cut on the tree side. Roots this close to a large tree are likely needed for the tree's
stability and would not be recommended.
Recommendations:
The Redwood trees in question have outgrown their available growing space and are causing
significant property damage. This species is a poor species for a small area surrounded by
hardscapes and conflicts due to root growth are imminent. Fixes to the damaged concrete areas
have taken place in the past through grinding concrete or completely replacing concrete. New
damage has been observed. Redwood tree#3 has had its root crown shaved in the past at the
sidewalk. Cutting roots this close to the tree could easily destabilize the tree. Cutting roots at 8
feet from the trees could cause the trees to become hazardous as roots in this distance are critical
for stabilizing the trees. It is recommended to remove the trees to fix the damages caused by the
roots of the trees as root cutting would be needed closer than 8' from the trees. The caused
damages cannot be remedied without causing damage to roots within the 8' area. The concrete
areas are recommended to be protected by future root growth from replanted trees by a root
barrier installed at the edge of the concrete. The trees will need to be replaced by the
"Replacement Tree Guidelines" as seen in the tree removal ordinance for the city of Cupertino.
Each tree is recommended to be replaced by a 36"box tree of a medium stature with root barriers
installed and maintained. A tree such as a Chinese Pistache would be a good species selection.

Arborists are tree specialists who use their education, knowledge, training and experience
to examine trees, recommend measures to enhance the beauty and health of trees, and attempt to
reduce the risk of living near trees. Clients may choose to accept or disregard the
recommendations of the arborist, or seek additional advice.
Arborists cannot detect every condition that could possibly lead to the structural failure of
a tree. Trees are living organisms that fail in ways we do not fully understand. Conditions are
often hidden within trees and below ground. Arborists cannot guarantee that a tree will be
healthy or safe under all circumstances, or for a specified period of time. Likewise, remedial
treatments, like a medicine, cannot be guaranteed.
Treatment, pruning, and removal of trees may involve considerations beyond the scope of
the arborist's services such as property boundaries, property ownership, site lines, disputes
between neighbors, landlord-tenant matters, etc. Arborists cannot take such issues into account
unless complete and accurate information is given to the arborist. The person hiring the arborist
accepts full responsibility for authorizing the recommended treatment or remedial measures.
Trees can be managed, but they cannot be controlled. To live near a tree is to accept
some degree of risk. The only way to eliminate all risks is to eliminate all trees.
