RESOLUTION NO. 8989
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CUPERTINO
IN SUPPORT OF THE ZERO TOLERANCE PROGRAM TO ELIMINATE
THE PRESENCE OF WEAPONS ON SCHOOL CAMPUSES THROUGH
PREVENTION AND INTERVENTION
WHEREAS, a safe environment for our youth in school and in the community is
essential; and
WHEREAS, violence permeates our society, and youthful violence is increasing
both in quantity and severity; and
WHEREAS, the cities of Sunnyvale, Cupertino, Saratoga, Los Altos, and San
Jose and the Cupertino Union, Sunnyvale Elementary, Montebello, and Fremont Union
High School districts are involved in a collaborative effort to maintain a safe environment
tor our youth;
WHEREAS, ZERO TOLERANCE is a program to eliminate the presence of
weapons on school campuses, thus decreasing the potential for violence; and
WHEREAS, ZERO TOLERANCE has two major goals, prevention and
intervention, with students, parents, schools and the juvenile justice system each
participating in the development of appropriate activities.
WHEREAS, through the combined effort of our school districts and cities, we
will seek other solutions to recently increasing youth safety issues.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Cupertino supports the ZERO TOLERANCE program, and shall actively work with
parents, community, and other districts and communities to insure that the incidence of
youth involvement with weapons on school campuses and in the community are reduced
to ZERO and that programs or activities are instituted to prevent incidences of youth
violence at school and in the community.
