Plans, regulations and published tree protection standards used for site and tree assessment are: Site Map of Glenbrook Apartments provided by ACCO Management. Best Management Practices: Tree Risk Assessment (2nd Edition) (A publication of the International Society of Arboriculture) DESCRIPTION OF TREE AND PROBLEM ISSUE The subject tree is a coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), located at 10125 Mary Ave, Building 14. It has a trunk diameter of 41 inches at breast height, a vertical height of about 120 feet. The management problems associated with this tree are: • It is unsustainable due to the fact that this is a very large growing tree species, planted in a restricted space that does not allow for expansion of girth and root development. Encroachment into hardscape and building structure, and resultant property damage has been in progress for several years. • The basal root flare of the tree trunk is right up against the building and chimney structure. Damage is in progress and more is inevitable if left unersolved. • Invasive root growth and root crown expansion has already heaved and cracked the adjacent brick chimney structure, displaced a storage unit, and roots have damaged flooring inside the adjacent apartment unit. • Urgent repairs necessitate cutting of major structural roots and root crown, a process that will destabilize the tree and create a high risk situation for property damage and/or personal injury. It's now 40 — 50 yeargo4d eW,over-mature for the site. There is high risk associated with root cutting to facilitate essential property repairs. This is not possible to mitigate by any reasonable means other than removal of the entire tree. The location of the tree in proximity to the high use areas of the apartment complex, represent substantial targets for property damage and personal injury if the tree were to fail structurally. So risky root cutting is not an option. Donald W.
