Sign Exception for two wall signs, a blade sign and a wall sign height of 26"
(Panera Bread)
Design Review Committee decision final unless appealed.
Staff Presentation: Colin Jung, Senior Planner, briefly described the sign exception. The
wall sign is reasonably sized for the face of the building and essentially matches the
sign on the front elevation, which faces Stevens Creek Boulevard. Mr. Jung described
the blade sign and the wall sign height exceptions. The minor modifications being
requested were for decorative window awnings, decorative lighting and main entry
paving and trellis. Staff recommends approval based on the model resolution.
Commissioner Giefer asked about the maintenance of the sunshades and whether or not
they could swivel. Mr. Jung stated he didn't have any additional information on the
maintenance and believes they do swivel to provide shade. Commissioner Giefer stated
that the shades might be ineffective unless the sun is overhead. She explained that she
supports the shades from a pedestrian enclosure perspective but questioned the utility
and was concerned about the maintenance. Chairperson Miller agreed had the same
concerns.
Commissioner Giefer suggested adding a condition stating that the sunshades must be
maintained, cleaned and replaced if they tear or fray. Mr. Jung stated that staff would
have no problem adding that wording to condition #2.
Discussion continued regarding the sunshades. Chairperson Miller stated that he
would also like to se the added condition.
