Re: Peer Review of Arborist Report for Alder Removal at 10500 N. De Anza Blvd.
SCOPE OF WORK
The purpose of this report is to provide a peer review of an arborist report submitted to
the City of Cupertino by Deva Braden, a consulting arborist with Wood Architecture,
evaluating the current condition of one White Alder(Alnus rhombifolia) tree. I performed
a ground-level visual inspection of the subject trees and reviewed the supplied arborist
report.
OBSERVATIONS
I visited the site on Tuesday, August 2nd, 2022, and my findings are as follows:

I w99q§ktls'd WTMO',City of Cupertino the following three questions about the report

e.ui.;,.. of the white alder tree and the arborist report's
Signature Catherinstlit that the tree is in irreversible decline despite the tree having living
€ 4orthe crown. Do you agree with the need to remove this white alder?
Yes. There is a pathogenic wood-decaying fungus present (most likely sulphur
fungus), causing cubical brown rot of the heartwood of the subject tree. The
canopy remains green because the fungus does not break down the sapwood,
which allows the tree to stay green while the inner structural wood becomes the
consistency of a breadstick. This situation causes unpredictable failures of
branches or the entire tree during adverse weather conditions or otherwise.
2. Your evaluation of the arborist's proposed replacement tree, a 36-inch box Silver
Leaf Oak, (Quercus hypoleucoides) in the same location. The arborist states that
Silver Leaf Oak is a good candidate for a replacement tree due to enhanced
suitability for current environmental conditions.
I agree with the recommendation for a replacement species.
3. Do you have any suggestions or concerns you see with the removal or
replacement overall?
No, I agree with the assessment.
In my professional opinion, the report submitted to the City of Cupertino by Deva Braden
with Wood Architecture was accurate. The new species selection for the replacement tree
is an acceptable species and location.
Thank you for the opportunity to assist you in your arboricultural needs. If you have any
questions or concerns, please contact me at (916) 417-1979.
Respectfully,
Kelley Gilleran
