Teen 11-09-2022 APPROVED MINUTES CUPERTINO TEEN COMMISSION Wednesday, November 9, 2022 REGULAR TEEN COMMISSION MEETING CALL TO ORDER At 6:06 p.m. Vice Chair Halambi called the Teen Commission meeting to order. This was a teleconference meeting with no physical location. ROLL CALL Present: Cheung, Ding, Gupta, Halambi, Kasamsetty, Kumar, Luu, Shah. Absent: Qin, Tarra. Staff: Sonya Lee, Robert Kaufman, Rachelle Sander, Alex Greer. All commissioners teleconferenced for the meeting. CEREMONIAL MATTERS & PRESENTATIONS APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Subject: Approval of Minutes – October 12, 2022 Recommended Action: Review and approve the minutes from the Teen Commission meeting on October 12, 2022. Commissioner Pranav motioned to approve minutes. Vice Chair Halambi seconded the motion. Minutes approved. WRITTEN/ORAL COMMUNICATIONS No written or oral communications received. OLD BUSINESS No old business. NEW BUSINESS 2. Subject: Update on the Fiscal Year 2022-23 City Work Program Item Intergenerational Engagement Recommended Action: Receive an update on the status of the Intergenerational Engagement Fiscal Year 22-23 work program item and provide feedback. Alex Greer, Senior Center Supervisor, presented an update on the status of the Intergenerational Engagement Fiscal Year 22-23 work program item. The budget for the work program item is $20,000. Some proposed intergenerational programs included: Cupertino Teen Commission Minutes November 9, 2022 Techy Teens, Classics and Cookies, Silent Disco, Board Games Social, Walking Club Social, Arts and Crafts Social. Commissioner Ding asked what the timeline would be for the programs to start. The timeline would be for some socials to potentially start in spring 2023 and Techy Teens to start in Fall 2023. Chair Kasamsetty asked what a silent disco is? Alex Greer described a silent disco as an event in which each participant has on headphones and the music is played by a D.J. Commissioner Shah asked if anyone could come to the silent disco. Alex Greer explained that it will be open for teens to sign up. Commissioner Gupta asked if the Classics and Cookies event would only provide cookies because many participants might not be able to eat them. Alex Greer responded that they could consider adding fruit as an option. Commissioner Luu asked if any group could come play for the Classics and Cookies event. Alex Greer said that any group could potentially play and that it would likely be dependent on availability. Chair Kasamsetty asked about marketing. Alex Greer indicated that the programs would be advertised in newsletters, the Recreation Schedule, the Scene, social media, and flyers. Vice Chair Halambi asked where the events would be held. Alex Greer indicated that they would be at the Senior Center. Commissioner Cheung asked what kind of program Techy Teens would be. Alex Greer answered that it would be drop in. Commissioner Ding suggested that the Interact clubs at the high schools be utilized for the programs. Vice Chair Halambi suggested that the City reach out to high schools through emails from the Deans. Chair Kasamsetty suggested that the City utilize non-school affiliated volunteer organizations. She also recommended a field day or sports activity for an intergenerational program. Commissioner Ding suggested a program in which teens could create logs or stories from listening to seniors. Vice Chair Halambi suggested a program with animals, teens, and seniors. Chair Kasamsetty suggested movie nights, yoga, sharing objects and photos from the seniors, and an activity where seniors and teens create a story together one sentence at a time. Subject: Monthly Update Reports Recommended Action: Receive monthly update reports from City Staff and Teen Commissioners. • Staff Updates o Robert Kaufman, Teen Coordinator, provided a staff update.  Pizza and Politics update  Wildlife and Harvest Day at Blackberry Farm update  Veteran’s Day November 11  Tree Lighting December 2  Breakfast with Santa December 3  Santa Visits • Commissioner Updates o Vice Chair Halambi provided recaps on Mayor Meeting.  Mayor Paul term ends December 8  In person Commission meetings likely in February 2023 COMMISSIONER ATTENDANCE AT UPCOMING MEETINGS AND EVENTS • Vice Chair Halambi will attend the next Mayor’s Meeting.
